Escape From Namur
Annie Gilbert hears rumors that a dictator named Hitler is preparing to invade several European countries—including Belgium. But Annie’s town of Namur carries on with its 1940 summer festival, where she meets the handsome Henri Cailteur at a dance. Annie walks with him in the moonlight and falls in love. When Hitler invades Belgium at Liege, Henri joins the militia to fight the troops parachuting out of the sky. The German attack soon reaches Namur, where the terrified citizens evacuate on foot, taking whatever they can carry. Annie escapes with Henri and his father and mother, but only days into their journey, Henri is forced into hiding to avoid recruitment into the German army—or certain death. As his parents and Annie continue their desperate trek into France, she writes letters to Henri, unsure if she will ever see him again. Facing hunger, fatigue, and Nazi bombings, the refugees move forward with the hope of returning home one day. Based on a true story, Escape from Namur is a dramatic tale of endurance and love.
Marilyn Brown finds inspiring true stories that would make good historical fiction, and she feels the history of Utah is the place to look. The Black Canary is an important novel about Utah's mining communities, as is The Wine Dark Sea of Grass about the Mountain Meadows Massacre. After Marilyn's achievement of the BA, MA, and MFA, twenty published novels, and many awards, she feels grateful to discover remarkable fascinating family stories such as Ida Cailteur's World War II experiences told in Escape from Namur.
