Description

“If you would grow and be happy, help others to grow. Be a helper, a lifter, a builder.” These words by Bryant S. Hinckley, father of President Gordon B. Hinckley, are typical of the elder Brother Hinckley’s attitude toward life. The majesty and immortality of human beings and their infinite possibilities for joy through service and adherence to high ideals were the theme of his life’s work. This classic book, first published in 1958, is a compilation of short articles and stories that will provide help and inspiration to all who read it. Teachers, leaders, and speakers will find it a helpful source of material for lessons and talks. Perhaps the book’s greatest value will come to those who pick it up at random and from its pages receive comfort, encouragement, and faith to meet life’s everyday problems and to strive for better and finer living.

Bryant S. Hinckley was born on July 9, 1867, in Coalville, Utah, and passed away on June 5, 1961. Brother Hinckley spent the first years of his life in Cove Fort and Fillmore. He attended Brigham Young University and later taught there. He also taught at the LDS University (now Ensign College) in Salt Lake City, was general manager of the Deseret Gymnasium, and served as president of the Northern States Mission of the Church. For twenty-two years Brother Hinckley was a member of the Liberty Stake presidency, serving eleven years as president. During much of this same period he was a member of the general board of the YMMIA (Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association―now the Young Men organization). Brother Hinckley’s genial personality, his rare sense of humor, and his outstanding gift of expression made him a popular speaker over the radio and at Church and civic gatherings. His writings include a number of biographies, faith promoting stories, editorials, magazine articles, and Church lesson manuals.
